A hemp bill is before the Vermont House Agriculture Committee.
It would allow the state to issue permits for growing hemp, which the federal government considers illegal.
Hemp comes from the same plant as marijuana, but it is raised differently. Supporters say there is little risk that it would be diverted to the drug trade. And it has multiple uses, including as heating fuel and fabric or rope material. The committee chair says the issue could end up with a challenge to the federal ban.
