What Is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD)is a non psychoactive component of hemp and cannabis that works as an anti-inflammatory, painkiller, muscle relaxer, anti-cancer, and relaxing agent, without causing the “high” typical of smoked cannabis. It is naturally produced in both hemp and cannabis, but there is typically only a trace amount present. In states where medical cannabis is legal, growers have bred strains that contain a significant amount of CBD along with THC so that patients can take advantage of therapeutic effects. It is only very recently hemp has also been bred to contain a high amount of CBD, but without the psychoactive compound THC. Unlike cannabis, hemp is legal throughout the United States as long as the flowers are not used and there is no THC present. This allows patients in non-medical cannabis states to legally obtain and benefit from CBD by using food grade high CBD hemp extract. Most hemp extracts available for sale only contain trace amounts of CBD. Unless stated otherwise, it should be assumed that these products do not contain a therapeutic amount of CBD. "Cannabinoids” is a blanket term covering a family of complex chemicals (both natural and man-made) that lock on to cannabinoid receptors—protein molecules on the surface of cells. Humans have been using cannabis plants for medicinal and recreational purposes for thousands of years, but cannabinoids themselves were first purified from cannabis plants in the 1940s. The structure of the main active ingredient of cannabis plants—delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—was discovered in the 60s. It wasn’t until the late 1980s that researchers found the first cannabinoid receptor, followed shortly by the discovery that we create cannabinoid-like chemicals within our own bodies, known as endocannabinoids. “We’re all born with a form of cannabis already in our bodies. It’s called the endocannabinoid system (ECS)… Like it or not, each and every one of us is fundamentally wired to respond to cannabis.” We have two different types of cannabinoid receptor, CB1 and CB2, which are found in different locations and do different things. CB1 is mostly found on cells in the nervous system, including certain areas of the brain and the ends of nerves throughout the body, while CB2 receptors are mostly found in cells from the immune system. Because of their location in the brain, it’s thought that CB1 receptors are responsible for the infamous ‘high’ (known as psychoactive effects) resulting from using cannabis. Over the past couple of decades scientists have found that endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors are involved in a vast array of functions in our bodies, including helping to control brain and nerve activity (including memory and pain), energy metabolism, heart function, the immune system and even reproduction. Because of this molecular multitasking, they’re implicated in a huge range of illnesses, from cancer to neurodegenerative diseases. Are supplements safe? Not all herbs and supplements are safe. If you are unsure about the safety of a supplement or herb, talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or dietitian. Always tell your doctor if you are using a dietary supplement or if you are thinking about combining a dietary supplement with your conventional medical treatment. It may not be safe to forgo your conventional medical treatment and rely only on a dietary supplement. This is especially important for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
When using dietary supplements, keep in mind the following:
•Like conventional medicines, dietary supplements may cause side effects, trigger allergic reactions, or interact with prescription and nonprescription medicines or other supplements you might be taking. A side effect or interaction with another medicine or supplement may make other health conditions worse.
•The way dietary supplements are manufactured may not be standardized. Because of this, how well they work or any side effects they cause may differ among brands or even within different lots of the same brand. The form of supplement that you buy in health food or grocery stores may not be the same as the form used in research.
•Other than for vitamins and minerals, the long-term effects of most dietary supplements are not known.
